I had been fretting about Frank Reed. He was almost too dangerous to be out and about in a free society. The gun deal at the stadium clinched it for me. I kept wondering what would have happened if he would have killed the fan over a seat mix-up. He would have gone to prison for sure.

But his violent side was bound to come out again. It was too easy for him to revert to the gun. For him it answered all of the questions a cop is bombarded with. In most instances the gun paralyzes the person it’s being pointed at, especially if the gun yielder looks like a crazy man. But it isn’t one-hundred percent. Some people try to take the gun away from the gunman. That almost always ends in death. One person goes to jail the other goes to his grave. I didn’t want Frank Reed to go to either place.

He was my compatriot in a place where there were none for an eastside outcast. If I asked him he would stand shoulder to shoulder with me in an attack against the stars; or the bosses. He was a loyal compatriot and that was scary. It meant I was imposing my will upon him. Something I didn’t wish to do. It meant I was leading and he was following; another frightening thought.

My partner came back from his vacation and we resumed the interviews of almost any criminal associate we could trap in an office to interview. It was still fun and we still laughed when we walked out of their offices. I felt the crooks thought we were insane and unlike any cops they had ever come across. Captain Bud and Boob were seething about the interviews but I didn’t care.

It was okay for me. I had set a course for myself subconsciously for disaster. Being a detective in Intelligence was like a kid sneaking into Disney World knowing that soon he was going to get caught and tossed out so he rode every ride he could while he looked over his shoulder for the local gendarmes. I was riding every ride. I knew my time was nearing an end so I was going to shake the politicos’ trees while I was there. I was a congenital shit-disturber, the one nobody wanted around.

My partner, on the other hand, was a career minded guy, a made cop. His promotion was forthcoming if he could keep me in check. But he enjoyed screwing with the untouchable invisible crooks as much as I did.

We didn’t have any more Jesse Stoneking sightings. My partner had never seen him and I described to him the way he acted and the threatening glares he aimed at me. He wanted to kill him too. He lived not far from where Jesse had taken up residence. His kids played in the grass where the snake was hiding. He tossed a ball for his dog there.

Guido advised me Jesse had gone straight and he was a card-carrying Local 562 pipe-fitter employed at the brewery.
